TAG Grading listened to the demands of avid collectors eager to expand their TAG'd portfolios as their universe of eligible cards continues to grow with a leap back in time to 1989.
At their on-site grading appearance at the National Sports Collectors Convention in Chicago in July, TAG officially opened the door to what many collectors consider the year which launched the Modern era of trading cards. With this change, numerous iconic cards became eligible for TAG's revolutionary grading method of machine-learning computer vision grading including the 1989 Upper Deck Ken Griffey Jr, rookie cards of hobby icons Kobe Bryant and Derek Jeter, and collector favorite sets such as 1993 Topps Finest and 1997 Metal Universe Basketball.
For TAG Co-Founder and Vice President of Product and Innovation Michael Cook, the expansion is important both professionally and personally. A lifelong baseball catcher, Cook relishes the opportunity to collect his childhood hero in TAG slabs, with his favorite card, the 1992 Bowman Mike Piazza, now eligible for submission. "For me, collecting Mike Piazza was a devotion, fusing my love of the game with a tangible emblem of inspiration," Cook stated.
"Cementing the stars of yesterday secures their legacy in the future - we're looking forward as we preserve the past."
The new timeline went into place immediately, with cards from 1989-1999 eligible for August's TAG Grading Drop, provided they meet the rest of TAG's grading criteria, which can be viewed here.
Cook and TAG have no intention of stopping there, with steady market growth and increasing submission rates each month further encouraging TAG's expansion. "1989 is only the beginning for TAG," Cook says.
